At the National Education Association Representative Assembly (NEA-RA), held in San Diego in July 2009, the following amendment to the NEA Legislative Program was approved. This Legislative Program guides the lobbying efforts of the National Education Association during the 111th Congress, Second Session. NEA supports
including school library programs taught by certified or licensed media specialist (teacher/librarian) in the list of core subject areas under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

SSLMP Mission Statement:
To network, encourage and disseminate information helpful to the school library media community in Wyoming.
Objectives:
To improve the quality of learning in both formal and informal settings
To support school library media personnel
in developing standards that promote effective use of the school library media center
by sharing and disseminating information, techniques, and standards
by informing state leadership of the importance of school libraries to the educational mission
by establishing and maintaining channels of communications between the organization, the profession and the public
by stimulating use of communication technologies throughout Wyoming
in assisting administrators, managers, and others responsible for planning communication technologies and materials in schools and libraries
by encouraging research on a statewide basis to determine current "best practices"
in collaborating with the State Department of Education and State Government in the formation of policies, standards, and practices in educational communications and technologies
in maintaining contact with agencies who are interested in educational communication and technology as well as establishing cooperation with the educational communications industry
Goals:
To promote the use of information more efficiently and effectively
To encourage our local communities to support our endeavours within the schools as well as the State to enhance academic achievement for our students
Goal #1: Continuously review and refine the Wyoming Information Power Implementation Plan.
Goal #2: Offer Information Power awareness opportunities and programming that informs community organizations and Wyoming librarians of the Information Power standards and principals.
A. Spring Section Meeting 2006 – David Loertscher “Ban Those Bird Units”
B. 2006 Information Power Summer Institute (Joyce Valenza)
C. Fall Conference 2006 – AASL past president (guest presenter) & AASL Leadership & Collaboration Institute
D. Spring Section Meeting 2007 (strategic plan alignment & bylaws)
E. Encourage strong participation in the program committee planning for conference.
F. Utilize LSTA funding for school-library staff development
Goal #3: Promote use of electronic informational resources to school librarians and state population and other libraries and librarians outside the school population.
A. Creation of a SSLMP wiki during the 2006 Info Power Summer Institute
B. Creation of a SSLMP blog during the 2006 Info Power Summer Institute
C. SSLMP mailing list
D. Development of a SSLMP Handbook from the State Library => Website
Goal #4: Encourage curricular collaboration between all types of librarians and educators.
A. Invite the Academic Section to Information Power activities
B. Fall Conference 2006 – AASL past president (guest presenter) & AASL Leadership & Collaboration Institute
Goal #5: Enhance communication, network capabilities, and collaborative efforts between library media personnel in Wyoming.
A. Use the WEN (Wyoming Education Network) to communicate when face-to-face communication is not an option-especially for section officer meetings.
B. Continue offering strong programming at the spring section meetings, Information Power Summer Institute, and fall conference which encourages more school library personnel to attend.
C. Provide time during meetings for collaborative discussions and networking
D. Support the formation of a joint section meeting in the spring between four of the sections, not just Children’s and School.
Goal #6. Identify issues/concerns/needs of the school library media specialists in the state.
A. Conduct needs assessments following section meetings and summer Institute.
B. Participate in school library questionnaires/surveys to generate data that may support the need for change due to issues, needs, and concerns that surface from the questionnaires/surveys.
